I've always wanted to replace Samus Aran with a new set of protagonists, because most other franchises were doing it, too. MGS2 had Raiden replacing Snake, DMC4 had Nero replace Dante, and so on. Another reason was because I'm very interested in group-dynamics in a video game, whether it's in an RPG, an MMORPG, or a shooter. So I thought, "Hey, what if I replaced Samus Aran with a small military squad as main protagonists?" Thus, did I make a new set of characters, Lambda Squad.
I know it seems out-of-place for a Metroid fanfic to revolve around a team of people rather than just one person, because Metroid was about the sense of isolation and lonliness in a dark, dreaded world that wants the player dead. And, I know it feels even less so with a small band of fifteen-year-old Federation military soldiers as the main protagonists instead of Samus, who's always been the main protagonist of the entire franchise since the original Metroid for the NES. But, I thought I wanted to do something different for the Metroid franchise, anyway, replacing both Samus and the sense of isolation with a new set of protagonists and a sense of companionship and camaraderie.
